In 2023, I had the pleasure of photographing actress Jessica Belkin while she was filming in Houston, and we opted for in studio. The session was casual yet fast-paced, and some of my favorite images from last year came from the project.
Jessica arrived at the studio ready to kill it, clearly, bringing with her a calm confidence that made the session flow smoothly. From the first frame, it was clear she understood the nuances of posing and expression, making it incredibly easy to capture her. Working with Jessica was one of the highlights of my studio work in 2023. Her professionalism and ease in front of the camera made the session.
Last year, my focus was predominantly on studio work. My fave "controlled environment" allowed me to resharpen my techniques after a year off, and I got experiment again with lighting – something I aim to do more of this summer.
However, as much as I appreciate the precision and control of studio work, I'm eager to get back on the road and explore more location shoots this year and next. Shooting on location brings its own set of challenges and rewards, from adapting to varying lighting conditions to incorporating the natural environment into the composition. I don't prefer either over the either: give me a rad studio or give me a killer location, any day of the week!
